Green Filmmaking: A Guide to Sustainable Movie Production (Routledge, 2025)
Beyond the principles of reduce, reuse, recycle, this book looks at how every department on a production can minimize its environmental impact.

Is your filmmaking contributing to the environmental crisis, or is it part of the solution? How can film students make movies in a more ecologically friendly way so that our planet can continue to be inhabited by humans who watch their films? This book suggests step-by-step ways that each person and department on a film’s production can make simple changes to reduce their project’s environmental footprint, from including climate content to offering vegetarian craft service options.

It is an essential guide for film students, graduates, and professionals engaged in the practice of making movies.

MESS Hosts Conversation From Acclaimed Filmmaker Kent Hayward

MESS (Media Ecology Soul Salon) at the UnUrban in Santa Monica will host a conversation with filmmaker and educator Kent Hayward moderated by skilled interviewer Gerry Fialka on October 11th from 4-6pm.

DATE:             Saturday, October 11, 2014

TIME:             4-6 pm

LOCATION: MESS at UnUrban Coffee House, 3301 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica, 90404, 310-315-0056

COST:             Free admission

Hayward’s work has been screened at over 25 festivals, including Dances with Films, DocuWest, New Filmmakers and Film Independent's Cinema Lounge. The Los Angeles Times’ Kevin Thomas declared Hayward’s film Homestead Artifact “deeply affecting… Hayward has succeeded beautifully.” LA Weekly called it “an affecting rumination on the importance of memories.”

The conversation may refer to a few of Kent Hayward’s films (and a few from Hayward’s students’ films):

SUNSET TO SUNSET (’10, 3 min) A stop-motion walk across Los Angeles in which the filmmaker comes face to face with the city instead of watching it blur by through a windshield.

AUGUST (’14, 10 min) A new film of stolen moments, both real and imagined, from a return to rural Michigan.

PORTRAITS (’95-present, 6 min) Excerpts from an ongoing collection of character studies.

HOMESTEAD ARTIFACT (’00, 49 min) A personal documentary about the filmmaker’s family rediscovering their lost homestead in rural New Mexico and the pieces of history buried there.

“I am really excited to be appearing at MESS,” says Hayward. “Curator Gerry Fialka’s series attracts a smart, engaged audience that’s passionate and knowledgeable about all kinds of things.”

“My films aim to tell big stories through small details,” continues Hayward. “Sometimes I find metaphors in really personal moments, sometimes in a cutaway shot or some trivial incident. It might be the way someone carries their hand, a spider in a web on a windy day, a child jumping into the sand. You can’t make that stuff up, so I just try to stay open to it and figure out how to incorporate it.”
