After earning an MFA in Film & Video Production from the California Institute of the Arts, Hayward worked in the entertainment industry on film and television productions including Inception, The Aviator, Eureka!, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and The Dark Knight Rises. Hayward is a tenured Associate Professor at California State University Long Beach and has taught film at California State University San Bernardino, Loyola Marymount University and El Camino College.
